5 quick questions reveal Tone’s journey.

What was the application process?

‘I was a referral from one of the electrical engineers, it was a straightforward process with regards to the application. I was required to undertake 2 interviews and had the opportunity to meet some of the team from across the different disciplines.’

How did you discover the world of building services?

‘Initially, the realm of building services wasn’t really on my radar, and it wasn't until the first interview, that it came up as a possibility for me to consider.  Surprisingly, at university, the only component of building services I was exposed to was HVAC, but it wasn’t a subject covered independently.  I definitely came to the interviews with an open mind.

Now, building services has become a passion of mine and each day brings new discoveries and challenges. No two days are the same.’

What have been the biggest skills that you have learnt coming into the professional world as an intern?

‘Transitioning from intern to graduate engineer, my journey has sharpened my communication skills, especially formal emails and interpersonal skills. This is something that wasn’t really covered in university. The internship exposed me to interdisciplinary collaboration with engineers, architects, project managers, and modellers, which showed how important a collective effort is to achieve a shared goal.

Site inspections brought a whole new perspective, moving away from the theoretical emphasis in university. Being on-site enabled me to witness buildings literally come to life and has been crucial for me to be able to bridge that gap between academic knowledge and real-world application.’

What have been the big changes from an internship to a graduate position?

‘Going into a graduate engineer position definitely brought some changes and challenges for me. One learning curve has been learning the two connected disciplines; hydraulics and mechanics. But, I think the most significant leap has been communication. Handling external phone calls and interacting with clients presented a daunting challenge, but I know it's been an important step. Also, I think, in-person meetings felt like the responsibility and accountability in my new role increased.’

How has the Cosgroves’ culture impacted your development in the professional world?

‘The culture at Cosgroves has played a major role in my development as an engineer. It's been great! I can always get help and support when I need it - regardless of how busy my colleagues are, they are always willing to help. The office has positive and 'chilled' vibes, which I think makes it easier for collaboration across disciplines. I appreciate the strong social aspect, regular events and weekly Friday drinks, it makes me want to come to work!

Also, the flexible working policy at Cosgroves has proven to be a significant asset. I’m an avid participant in social sports, and the flexibility in working hours has accommodated for this, it makes for a great work-life dynamic.’
